Featured Coach: Jesus Perez

This month, we’re spotlighting Jesus Perez from City SC NOCO. Driven by a lifelong passion for the game and a commitment to developing confident, resilient young people, Jesus believes great coaching is built on strong relationships, continuous learning, and creating an environment where every player can thrive. We caught up with Jesus to learn more about his coaching philosophy, the mentors who have shaped his journey, and what it means to be part of the City SC family.

Q: What inspired you to get into coaching, and what continues to drive your passion for developing players today?
A: My passion for coaching comes from my love for the game and the impact soccer can have on a young person’s life. I was fortunate to have coaches who believed in me, challenged me, and helped shape who I am both on and off the field. I wanted the opportunity to give that same experience back to the next generation. What continues to drive me today is seeing players grow—not just as soccer players, but as confident, resilient young people. Watching them overcome challenges, reach their goals, and develop a lifelong love for the game is incredibly rewarding.

Q: Who have been the biggest influences on your coaching journey, and what lessons from them still shape your approach?
A: I’ve been fortunate to learn from a number of great coaches and mentors throughout my journey. The biggest lesson I’ve taken from each of them is that coaching is about building relationships first. Players learn best when they feel supported, challenged, and trusted. I’ve also learned the importance of always being a student of the game. Soccer is constantly evolving, and I believe great coaches never stop learning, reflecting, and looking for ways to improve.

Q: How would you describe your coaching philosophy, and what do you hope players take away from their experience with you?
A: I believe in creating a player-centered environment where players are encouraged to think, solve problems, and express themselves. My role is to guide, challenge, and support their development rather than simply provide answers. I want players to leave my environment not only as better soccer players, but also as better teammates, leaders, and people. If they develop confidence, resilience, a strong work ethic, and a genuine love for the game, then we’ve been successful.

Q: What does a great training environment look like, and how do you create a culture where players can thrive both on and off the field?
A: A great training environment is one where players feel safe to make mistakes, challenge themselves, and compete every day. It should be positive, demanding, and enjoyable all at the same time. We create that culture by setting high standards, building strong relationships, encouraging open communication, and making sure every player feels valued. When players enjoy coming to training and know they’re supported, they’re much more willing to step outside their comfort zone and grow.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a City SC coach, and how does being part of the City SC network impact your work with players and families?
A: Being part of City SC means being committed to providing players with the best possible environment to develop and reach their potential. It’s about creating a culture that values education, player development, and long-term growth over short-term results. Being connected to the City SC network allows us to provide our players and families with outstanding opportunities, resources, and pathways while maintaining a consistent philosophy across the club. It’s exciting to be part of something focused on developing not only better players, but better people.
