Featured Coach: City SC San Diego, Paul Ritchie

This month, we’re spotlighting Paul Ritchie, MLS NEXT Director for City SC San Diego. Holding a UEFA Pro License along with UEFA Advanced and Advanced Youth Licenses, Paul has spent years developing players and guiding them through some of the most important stages of their soccer journey. We caught up with Paul to learn more about his coaching philosophy, the mentors who influenced him, and his passion for helping young athletes reach their potential both on and off the field.

Q: What inspired you to get into coaching, and what continues to drive your passion for developing players today?

A: Having had the opportunity to play at a high level, I always wanted to give back to the game by sharing my experiences and knowledge. What continues to drive me is helping young players grow, achieve their goals, and gain confidence both on and off the field.

Q: Who have been the biggest influences on your coaching journey, and what lessons from them still shape your approach?

A: I’ve been fortunate to work under some incredible coaches throughout my career. Each one has influenced me in different ways, and I’ve taken small pieces from all of them to help shape the coach I am today. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that there is always something new to learn and ways to continue improving.

Q: How would you describe your coaching philosophy, and what do you hope players take away from their experience with you?

A: Above all, I want players to enjoy the game. Sometimes the fun can get lost in the competitive side of soccer, but that’s such an important part of why we play. I encourage my players to be the best versions of themselves, give their best effort every day, and leave the field with no regrets.

Q: What does a great training environment look like, and how do you create a culture where players can thrive both on and off the field?

A: A great environment is one where players enjoy coming to training, feel supported, and have the freedom to learn and grow. Soccer should be a positive part of their day and, in many ways, an escape from the pressures of everyday life. It’s important that we connect with players on a personal level, take a genuine interest in who they are as people, and help them develop not just as athletes, but as individuals.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a City SC coach, and how does being part of the City SC network impact your work with players and families?

A: I’ve been fortunate to be part of City SC for a number of years, and one of the most rewarding aspects is watching young players develop into confident, capable young adults. Being part of that journey is incredibly special. I love the way City SC supports and guides players beyond the game, helping them become well-rounded individuals who are prepared for success both on and off the field.
